Colorado Dental Insurance Carriers

On Friday August 16, 2013 the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies’ Division of Insurance released approved plans and rates for 2014. We looked at the approved medical carriers in an earlier post. Today we will take a look at the approved dental plans and rates for 2014.

Will there be many options for dental insurance through the exchange?

The Colorado Division of Insurance approved 9 dental carriers to offer products through the exchange. This does not mean that all of these plans will be offered on the exchange; insurance companies may choose not to participate in the state’s online insurance marketplace.

Will premiums be the same statewide?

Colorado is broken up into groups of counties to create 11 geographic rating areas, which are used to help determine premiums. Insurers can charge different premiums in the different areas; so the same person may have a different premium in area one then they would have in area nine. Here is a map showing the different rating areas in Colorado:

Which insurance companies were approved to offer dental plans on the exchange?

Best Life Insurance Company was approved to offer six individual plans and six small group plans both on and off the exchange. Plans will be available statewide at low and high value levels.

CIGNA was approved to offer one individual plan only on the exchange and one individual plan both on and off the exchange. Cigna’s low value plans will be available statewide.

Colorado Dental Services, dba Delta Dental of Colorado,was approved to offer five individual exchange only plans and four small group exchange only plans. Low and high value individual plans will be offered statewide.

Dentegra Insurance Company was approved to offer six individual plans and six small group plans both on and off the exchange. Plans will be available statewide at the low and high value levels.

Humana Insurance Company was approved to offer one low value, individual plan, statewide, only on the exchange.

Metropolitan Life Insurance Company was approved to offer four small group plans both on and off the exchange. Plans will be available statewide at the low and high value levels.

Premier Access was approved to offer three individual plans and three small group plans both on and off the exchange. Plans will be available statewide at the low value level.

Rocky Mountain Hospital & Medical Services, dba Anthem BCBS was approved to offer four small group plans only on the exchange and nine small group plans both on and off the exchange. Low and high value small group plans will be available in area one, which is the Boulder area.

The Guardian Life was approved to offer nine small group plans both on and off the exchange. Plans will be available statewide at the low and high value levels.
