Health insurance marketplaces experience bumpy launch
The new health insurance exchanges opened Tuesday October 1.
If you ventured to try and explore HealthCare.gov or one of the state operated exchanges, chances are you were met with error messages and apologies. For those that were able to access one of the new health insurance marketplaces, navigating the sites wasn’t always so simple either.
Even today, the new marketplaces don’t seem to be operating smoothly. On top of heavy user traffic and IT problems, congress is playing budget games, resulting in a partial government shutdown effecting up to 800,000 federal employees. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will have to operate with only 48 percent of staff; that is 40,512 furloughed HHS workers who won’t be working as of day two of the shutdown. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will be without 65 percent of its 5,994 workers. However, many ACA activities will continue to be carried out; including coordination between Medicaid and the Marketplace. Take a look at the HHS Contingency Staffing Plan for more information.
Despite the rocky start for the public health insurance exchanges, here at Strenuus, we have been hard at work collecting data about the new exchange offerings. We’ve gathered information about which carriers are participating in each of the states (as well as which insurers didn’t make it to opening day) and what those carriers are offering. If you have questions like: which insurers are offering exchange plans? which carriers are offering new narrow networks? what are those CO-OPs doing? … we probably have the answer.
